Xativa is a town in the Valencian province built on the right bank of the river Albaida. The town has a clean, attractive appearance with numerous fountains and tree shaded avenues.
If you like historic buildings you’ll love Xativa castle. Rising out of the town itself with it’s 30 towers and 4 fortified gates it makes an impressive spectacle. This monument actually comprises of 2 castles one on each hill. Whilst the castle has not really been restored there are lot of buildings in surprisingly good condition and it has been attractively landscaped with gardens and fountains. For the history buffs among us I can tell you that the Carthaganian General, Hannibal, ruled from this castle and one of the towers is named after his wife Queen Himilce. His son was born here in 218BC. Don’t worry if you can’t find a parking space at the top of the hill there is a tourist train that runs from Xativa town up to the castle on a regular basis. October to March: 10 to 18h. Monday closed April to September: 10 to 19h. Monday closed
