Family/Home - Children & School

Teach your child English at Home If your child is in the Spanish education system you will no doubt have noticed that he/she is learning English as a foreign language.  In other words by age 8 they will know their numbers, colours and how to introduce themselves but that is about it.  If you want your child to be able to read and write English as well as a child who has been taught in the UK, you can of course employ a tutor to supplement his lessons at school or you may want to consider teaching him/her yourself:

Do think long and hard about your decision:
It is a great responsibility and commitment of your time and energy.
You should have a quiet, warm, well lit area for lessons, away from distractions.
You need to assess the cost and availability of the relevant study materials and books.
You need to research your lessons to make sure that you are not expecting too much or too little from your child, in other words check that the books and other materials are matched to your child’s age and ability
You should formulate lesson plans.

Routine
You need to put aside a set amount of time on a regular basis, preferably at the same time every day or every couple of days so that your child knows that he should be studying and not playing with his friends, watching TV or playing on the computer.  It also helps the rest of the family because they learn that you are not to be disturbed during this time. Similarly, you should not answer the telephone.  Ideally you should have a clear written timetable/programme of study.

Location
Your child will need a good, flat surface to work on with storage for reference and study books.  Your child’s books/folders should be stored safely with each piece of work dated so that he feels it is valued, plus you can keep a track of what you have done and how he is progressing.
The workplace should be away from noise and other distractions, ie no TV or stereo.

Equipment
You need a good supply of stationery such as exercise books, paper, pens, paints, felt tips, crayons, pencils and rubbers.
English Key Stage Study Books and sample tests are available from Amazon at a price of approx £4 each plus postage.  There are also a wide range of parent support books and websites available.  You will of course also need a dictionary.

How is Your Child Going to Study
It is important to consider not only what your child will learn but how they learn and what approach suits them best. Not all learning comes from books or printed sources and where appropriate children should make use of a variety of media, the Internet, television and educational visits.

Children also need to acquire skills as well as knowledge. For example they need to be encouraged to develop discussion skills, problem solving skills and social skills. For instance you could take him out and ask him to translate Spanish for you.  This will teach him the difference between formulating a sentence in Spanish and doing the same in English

Often learning involves children taking an active role in their own work. They carry out experiments, conduct surveys, draw pictures from real life, interview members of the public (or your family) and make studies at real locations.

Remember that good teaching includes regular feedback. Your child needs to know when something has been done well and, if it has not, how it could be improved. Successes and failures form the framework of the learning process and an effective programme recognises this fact.
