Denia

Denia is situated at the foot of the Montgo mountain National Park, crowned by an Islamic castle and awarded the EU’s Blue Flag every year for clean seas and 20kms of sandy beaches which makes this town a very attractive holiday destination.

Denia has a port where you can catch the ferry across to Ibiza or Majorca if you fancy a weekend away. The well equipped port also offers mooring points for 1593 boats as well as sailing, diving and windsurfing schools. For the more confident/experienced you can hire your own boat for the day.

Slightly inland on the La Xara/Jesus Pobre road is the La Sella Golf Club which offers golf classes in Spanish, English and German, a 25 bay driving range along with a practise bunker and a putting green.

Denia is notably the town with the most fiestas in the whole of Spain. For instance:

  • fallasIn March the streets are closed to traffic and 30’ high papier mache models (Fallas) are constructed which are set on fire on St Joseph’s Day (19th). The Fallas came about because carpenters worked by the light of oil lamps during Winter, these lamps were hung on wooden lampstands, in the longer daylight hours of Spring the lamps were no longer necessary so the lampstands were burnt as part of the offerings to St Joseph. The neighbours took the opportunity to add old clothes and junk to the fires.  In due course scarecrow type figures were added to the bonfires, these figures became more elaborate and eventually became the main feature of the fire.  All the Fallas are judged and set alight in reverse order, saving the best for last.
  • In June there are the three Bonfires of San Juan, “Foguera El Bassot”, “Foguera L’Hort” and “Foguera Les Portelles”. Along with the bonfires there is also music, open-air dances, games and a procession.
  • In July they hold the “Els Bous a la Mar” the bulls are paraded through the town to the bull ring which is on the port and has one side open to the sea, this way some of the participants of the bull running (bulls included) end up in the sea and are retrieved by boat.
  • In August Denia hosts the Moors and Christians festivities.
