Browser Choice Browser Choice In December 2009, the European Commission and Microsoft resolved a number of legal issues relating to fair trade and competition. Microsoft made a legally binding commitment that PC manufacturers and users will be given the opportunity to make any web browser the default and to turn access to Internet Explorer on or off.

As a result of this resolution on 2nd March Microsoft issued a Windows update which produces the screen pictured above.   This browser choice screen presents a list of browsers, with links to learn more about them and install them as they prefer. The design and operation of this choice screen was worked out in the course of extensive discussions with the European Commission.

The browser choice screen software update is an automatic download through Windows Update for Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. The software update will be installed automatically, or will prompt you to download or install it, depending on which operating system you are running and your settings for Windows Update. If you do not have automatic updating enabled, you can get the choice screen by going to Windows Update and clicking on “Check for Updates.”

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

You can set any browser to be your default browser and turn access to any browser on or off. You can add browsers to your computer and leave access to Internet Explorer turned on, or you can easily turn it off.

To help ensure that you receive the program you want from a publisher and web site you trust, you may be asked questions when downloading. This is standard protection offered by Microsoft Windows aimed at increased security and is not specific to the browsers displayed on BrowserChoice.eu
