Children (over 3 years)

  1. Believe it or not, the top toy for Christmas 2011 is set to be a plastic dachshund that poops plasticiine called Doggie Doo.  It is a dice based game where the players take it in turns to feed the pup and then see if it poops, if it does that player has to clean it up.  The first player to scoop up three poops is the winner.
  2. Soft toy, but please check the age rating as some can be very dangerous to unsupervised children
  3. Hot water bottle with a cartoon/Disney character cover
  4. Marble run or an old fashioned wooden toy like Mancala or Dominoes
  5. A 3D Puzzle
  6. Rainbow in my Room.  With this little gadget you can project a rainbow across any room.  For budding astronauts you may prefer the Moon in my Room gadget which hangs on the wall projecting "moonlight" and with 12 different phase settings you can display the moon how it actually would be seen outside at that time.
  7. A personalised story.  At the northpole.com you can create and print a free story with your child as the main character. Alternatively the Gift Experience sell personalised classic books where your child can be the main character in the Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, Romeo and Juliet, Pride and Prejudice or Robin Hood.
  8. A money box.  If you want something a little different take a look at the money maze
  9. A good story book: for youngsters there is the Gruffalo and the Gruffalo's Child, for slightly older children you could try the Captain Underpants series
  10. Classic Disney DVDs.

Teenagers

  1. A bit of light reading:  Boys tend to like books by David Almond, Philip Reeve, Philip Pullman and Kevin Crossley-Holland.  Popular books for girls, include the Twilight or Princess Diaries series or books by Cathy Hopkins, Echo Freer or K M Peyton.
  2. A new watch. Perhaps something a bit more grown up and functional. What about one that is waterproof to 3 metres or shock resistant.
  3. An alarm clock. You can get alarm clocks these days that you turn off by throwing them at the wall, or ones that display the time on the ceiling at the touch of a button or perhaps just a nice loud one that will manage to wake them up for school/college every morning.
  4. Sample sizes of perfume or aftershave may be appreciated once they start caring about what they look (and smell) like.
  5. Activity voucher, i.e. paintball or go-karting
  6. Something computer related like a multifunction printer, pen drive or MP3 player
  7. If you have a bit more money available to spend what about an ipod, a PSP, a caster board or some fly jumpers
  8. Tickets to a concert or a cinema, perhaps the X Factor finalists tour or their favourite band.
  9. What teenager doesn't like loud music.  Why not buy them some wireless headphones so they can wander around their room listening to their hearts content without you having to.
  10. DVDs of the films that were on at the cinema this year
